Eurorack News for April 21th 2024

The Holocene Electronics Air-Wave Modulation Source is a Eurorack module incorporating a voltage-controlled FM radio functionality with the ability to tune in various frequencies to generate unique static noise and radio station audio. With a CV input and Tune knob, the module gives users broad control to harness audio signals for experimental and creative purposes. It also provides a ‘Squeeze’ feature to amplify and asymmetrically clip the audio signal, creating unpredictably distorted sounds even from static frequencies. This feature capacitates the generation of random voltages based on broadcast content.

This module also includes an LFO section delivering triangle and square wave outputs over a span of frequency ranges and acts as an effective random voltage generator. The module comes with a Sample and Hold functionality that can draw upon both the radio receiver’s output and external inputs to generate random voltages. Mentionable, when set to “VERY FAST,” the output of the Sample and Hold can generate bit-crushed audio from the AIRWAVES, offering a rich source of experiment-worthy sounds.

The technical specs note a height of 10hp, a depth of 22mm (or 25mm including the power cord), with a current consumption of +12V (87mA) and -12V (35mA).

The Eurorack setup described incorporates the Intellijel VCO-1u, a compact module featuring a triangle core oscillator and LFO that provides four simultaneous pure waveforms and versatile pitch control options. Erica Synths’ EDU Kick Drum, a DIY kit, is also part of this configuration, emulating the iconic sounds of classic analog drum machines.

For strengthening sound outputs and controlling various channels, Noise Engineering’s Xer Mixa summing mixer is included, offering ten stereo-paired inputs, three output busses, tactile controls, and an analog signal path for clean, high-quality sound. The Voxmachina Tom Yum VCO contributes a saw core analog VCO with FM, PWM, and SYNC modulation, delivering stable and powerful old analog raw sounds.

Finalizing the setup is the System80 810 MK2, a complete subtractive analog voice module inspired by vintage Japanese analog synthesizers. The module incorporates a high-quality VCO, VCF, and VCA, providing classic analog textures and modulation possibilities.

By combining these modules and experimenting with their sonic capabilities, users can produce rich, vintage-inspired sounds with a modern twist, enabling a blend of nostalgia and innovation in their modular synthesizer journey.
